About Labor Day 1 May

At that tim, on May 1, 1886 350,000 workers went on a mass strike in several places in the United States (US). They are organized by the American Labor Federation. Workers demand improved welfare and working hours 8 hours a day. At that time, workers were forced to work up to 15 hours a day. 

Then on May 3, 1886, the government sent a number of police to reduce the strike at the McCormick factory. Police opened fire on workers who went on strike. Four people were killed, dozens were injured. The workers were angry and they took action on May 4 at the Haymart field.

The action which was followed by tens of thousands of workers initially went peacefully. But suddenly a bomb exploded. It is not known who detonated the bomb. A policeman was killed and dozens injured. The police retaliated by firing at the workers. 

As a result of this incident, labor leaders were arrested and tried. Even the labor leader was sentenced to hang. The public was angry at the results of the trial. They urged the government to release detained labor activists. Labor activists were released. Since then it has been celebrated as Labor day

In Indonesia, after the end of the New Order era, every May 1st is celebrated by workers in Indonesia with demonstrations in various cities.

Then, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the time gave gifts to the workers. The Indonesian government makes International Labor Day celebrated every May 1 as a national holiday. May 1 holiday starts in 2014.
